Our CommunityMattex Service Company is involved in the Champaign County community. In May of 2010 we were honored to participate in the 18th Annual Kids' Building Fair which is put on by the Orpheum Chidlren's Science Museum in downtown Champaign. The fair is designed to celebrate Historic Preservation Week by giving children an educational and entertaining introduction to the building trades involved in preserving historic structures. The Orpheum Children's Science Museum is one of those structures. The building fair provides children with the opportunity to learn about and participate in a wide variety of activities with opportunities to build, plant, play and experiment with different hilding trade and construction tools and techniques. Mattex represented "Plumbing City" with two learning and interactive displays for the children. At one table the children could construct whatever they wished with an array of PVC pipes and connections. They were quite creative and proud of their work. Mattex had another table in which we allowed the children to learn how water can move objects. It contained a water wheel as well as an opportunity to place a small ball in an open PVC pipe which ran through a maze of twists and turns. All of the excess water was squirted out of a tall pipe with a sump pump. One child exclaimed, "I'm 16 years old and I even like this!" The Mattex Team enjoys particpating in our community's growth. The repeated visits to our "Plumbing City" by the children and their parents let us know that we were on target. We plan to have a bigger and more educational interactive display in the coming years. |
